World Map 1680
This 1680 richly embellished map of the world by cartographer Justus Danckers shows four allegorical scenes, representing the four elements. Fire is shown by war, Air by the heavens, Earth by harvesting, and Water by a maritime scene of ships and a
whale. Details include California shown as an Island, incomplete coastlines for Australia and New Zealand, and no trace of the
Antarctic. There is no coastline north of California, and no land bridge to Asia. The Great Lakes are opened to the west. Groups of figures are shown between the hemispheres and on either side of the smaller polar maps.
